For My Fellow Americans: A Declaration of Sorrow

Yes, even the ones who brought us here

It is a dismal day for many of us. I find myself incapable of acts of creativity or exercises in intellect — and especially anything that requires both, like writing.

Even if I could find space for that today, I know I can only share what’s on my heart and mind…and that sharing my thoughts and feelings might not be the right thing to do in this moment. They are dark and heavy. People have enough grief and fear to deal with — they don’t need me to add gas to those flames.

But maybe, just maybe, it’s reasonable to focus on our collective sorrow today. To write a letter to the women of America (and everyone else who will be hurt by the results of this election) to acknowledge and honor the vulnerability of our current situation.

I will do my best not to spiral into nihilism, which has been challenging for me since the election results started rolling in. In fact, maybe that’s where we should begin…

I’m so sorry for everyone who went to bed on Tuesday night anxious, and woke up on Wednesday morning terrified.
