There Are Holes in the Coverage of the Pelicot Case — and We Need Answers
From the perpetrators’ identities to the names of those files…why is this information so hard to find?
TW: rape, violence against women, crude language
It took me a long time to dive into the Pelicot rape case. I wasn’t sure I wanted to know anything more than what the headlines revealed.
But I couldn’t shake the feeling that it was imperative to pay attention to this case.
Gisèle Pelicot has bravely allowed a decade of her victimization at the hands of her husband to be made public in the hopes that this case will protect other women from the narrative that men “didn’t know this was rape.” In light of that, don’t we owe her our voices of support and our watchful eyes — especially knowing that the fabric of our patriarchal society depends upon being able to sweep this entire case under the rug?
So I took the plunge and began reading through one article after another.
I found myself a bit surprised that every article seemed to highlight the same basic facts. I had a growing list of questions — but I couldn’t find the answers.
