During the month before the election, I put all my home improvement projects on hold. I always have a running list of things that I’d like to accomplish and seven years later, I’m still working on it.

But at some point in late September, I started to worry that maybe it was an unwise use of my money. I couldn’t help but think of the consequences of the election going the way I suspected it would go. I couldn’t help but worry that I might not live here in the near future — that I might be fleeing for the Canadian border in a few months.

I understand some might find that melodramatic, but sadly, I’m not joking, nor do I feel those fears are melodramatic.

So after I sold a few large pieces of furniture that I’ve been storing in the garage and felt inspired to finally paint and organize that space, I decided not to go through with it. Canada, remember?

On the night of the election, a sunny, enthusiastic young woman who had reached out on Marketplace came to my house to look at the last major item I’d been trying to sell — the dining set that my ex and I bought when we moved in together.
