In the wake of the horrifying (though unsurprising) 2024 election results, I found myself seeking refuge in an unexpected place: Instagram.
That might sound odd to some, considering the fact that social media is a part of most people’s everyday life, but for me, it an anomaly. I have been taking a serious social media break since spring, when I found myself dealing with yet another round of cyberbullying on TikTok.
At the time, my father was about halfway through his hospice journey, and I could no longer justify engaging on platforms that routinely destroyed my mental health over the most banal arguments that 100% of the time turned into smear campaigns. It felt so unimportant — and honestly, so toxic and sick — in comparison to the very real and challenging journey of watching my father’s life come to an end.
So I put my TikTok account on Private and walked away.
