Women Who Are Opting Out of Dating Just Want Peace

This isn’t a strategy to force change…only a choice to be safe and happy

If you ask me what recent decisions I’ve made that have changed my life most profoundly for the better, I’d say, without hesitation, my decision not to date anymore.

It’s almost amusing because many people will respond with sadness or compassion, as if this is an unfortunate turn of events. I can assure you, it’s not.

The only heartbreaking aspect of this decision is what inspired it: the consistently dehumanizing experiences I’ve had in romantic relationships.

Choosing to enjoy my life as a single woman has felt amazing. And I’ve discovered that there are thousands of other women who have made a similar decision — women who are, like me, finding a whole new level of joy and fulfillment in singlehood. I am in very good company.

Some women are jokingly (and sometimes not jokingly) referring to this as America’s slow but growing adoption of South Korea’s 4B movement. There, women are opting out of the “4 Bs”: dating (biyeonae), sex with men (bisekseu), marriage to men (bihon), and childbirth (bichulsan).
