The decentralized metaverse is the amalgamation of a number of emerging technologies such AR/VR, blockchain-based smart contracts, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), cryptocurrencies, AI and more into a digitally-connected virtual space.

In 2021, we had the hype brought to the space when Facebook announced their ambitious metaverse plans and changed their corporate name to Meta to better reflect these virtual world ambitions. 2022 and 2023 have been building years for people engaged in the growth and development of decentralized metaverses. Soon, they will be able to enjoy the fruits of this hard work as the metaverse grows with greater technological advancements and adoption accelerates in 2024.

Let’s look at some of the trends we can expect to see in the metaverse in 2024.

Technology

Hardware developers such as Meta, Microsoft, Sony and a host of others will enhance their VR/AR headset offerings. New headsets will bring with them improved graphics; wider fields of vision; lighter, more natural looking designs for better mobility and style; as well as natural gesture and facial expression capabilities. 5G networks will spread globally allowing for the faster data transmission required for real-time metaverse experiences. Blockchain technologies will scale, facilitating digital ownership and payments within decentralized metaverses at lightning speeds.

AI and the Metaverse

AI is expected to be a key driver of the decentralized metaverse. AI will augment user experiences in areas within the metaverse realm such as accurate avatar creation, digital humans, multilingual accessibility, VR world expansion at scale, and intuitive interfacing.

Digital twins, the virtual representations of physical objects, systems, or processes, will be one of the primary use cases of AI in the metaverse. Digital twins may serve a wide range of purposes including, but not limited to, city planning, assembly line testing, conducting virtual surgeries, or designing the world’s next architectural masterpiece.

Digital World Proliferation

Decentralized metaverses such as The Sandbox, Xana, and Decentraland and the digital spaces within them are projected to become much more sophisticated. These platforms will allow individuals to work, learn, date, meet and play together in digital settings that are virtually identical to real-world architecture and geography. Users will purchase virtual land and properties or spend time in replicas of real cities and locations at a greater rate than at anytime in the past.

Exciting Business Opportunities

Marketers are salivating at the prospects of having entirely new digital universes in which they can sell, advertise, and increase consumer engagement for their brands and products.

Brands such as Nike, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton have already entered the space and their metaverse offerings are bound to expand. The metaverse creates new opportunities for these businesses to create immersive product experiences. Customers can try on clothing, explore showrooms, or even purchase digital versions of their products and brands all from the comfort of their living rooms.

Virtual storefronts in the metaverse expand on the digital shopping revolution spurred on by the likes of Amazon and will further disrupt traditional brick-and-mortar shops and shopping malls.

These are just a few of the trends we can expect to see from the metaverse in 2024. Stick with us at Liberty Metaverse as we aim to take the bull by the horns and help spur the growth of the metaverse in the year ahead.
