You Only Need One Person to Love You

When one love is enough.

It only takes one heart to love you.

Did you know that?

Yes, you who tosses and turns all night, hoping someone other than you would love you.

Did you know those endless, restless nights don’t have to continue?

[Shrugs.]

I have a secret for you.

Are you willing to come close and lend me your ear? I’ll be quiet, I promise.

(Whispering in a hushed tone.)

You are the only one that has to love you.

[Giggles.]

Sorry about that whisper tickle I gave you.

[Chuckles.]

One more thing (starts to whisper), you are the only one who has to love you. You don’t even have to like everything about yourself to love yourself. Did you know that too?

[More giggling.]

It’s nice to see you smile. I like seeing you enjoy yourself, it makes me happy. I hope it makes you happy too.

[Shrugs with a smirk.]

Don’t be so shy about expressing your joy! Savor those good feelings; they want you to savor them like a fine, aged wine.

[Rolls eyes.]

I’m serious. Remember, your heart only needs one love in this life.

You.

Do you think you’re worth it?

[Nods and shakes head.]

Is that a yes or a no?

[Nods in two ways.]

It’s both?

I get it. I was like that too for a while.

Answer me this: how can someone else love and appreciate you before you love you? I mean, if they do, you won’t believe or appreciate it, will you? I mean, you might for a time, but that will eventually wear off, like the honeymoon phase.

[Shrugs with a shameful look.]

It only takes one grand act of forgiveness to let go of all that bitterness and resentment towards a life that has been waiting for you to love you all along.

Did you know that?

[Eyes gazing down.]

I will let you know that some of the hardest work I have done was dropping the self-hate, self-doubt, and conditioning to find love outside of me. I wrestled with those untruths for years before I felt free of them. And to be honest, they still constrict my mind and heart from time to time. However, when they do, I remember my true love lies within — and I smile. It’s so easy to forgive myself now, even for moments of forgetting what true love is all about.

Did you make up your mind?

[Smiles and nods yes.]

Awesome!

It will be the hardest love you’ve ever had to win, but so very worth it in the end. Loving yourself is not about the chase. It’s not a honeymoon kind of love. It’s the real deal. The big Kahuna. The whole shebang.

[Face filled with a myriad of emotions, from terror to bliss.]

Don’t worry, you’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain. It all starts with forgiveness. Do you think you can start there?

[Tears roll down cheeks.]

You’re feeling it!

Here’s where to start. Say these four phrases to yourself every single day:

I’m sorry.

I forgive you.

Thank you.

I love you.

[Softly smiles and lets out a big sigh.]

Ah, it has begun. Tattoo those words to your mind and heart.

I’m sorry.

I forgive you.

Thank you.

I love you.

And so the self-love journey begins…
