Libraries.io has been growing at an incredible rate since launching a year and a half ago and being open sourced in March. It has become one of the most visited programming sites on the net.

So far it’s indexed almost 1.8 million libraries, frameworks and open source modules from 32 different package managers and graphed the dependency trees of more than 15 million GitHub repositories.

All of this was done whilst working on the project in my spare time and in between freelancing gigs — which turns out isn’t the most sustainable way to keep such a big project moving forwards, especially as more people start to depend on the service.

Today I’m excited to announce that Libraries.io is now a project of Brave New Software, supported by the Sloan Foundation and is seeking further funding to support future work through to Jan 2018. If you are interested in offering further support please get in touch by email at support@libraries.io.

Ben Nickolls will be joining me from mySociety, having provided advice towards the project in his spare time for the past 18 months. We’re both looking forward to what the rest of the year and 2017 has in store for us, and what we have in store for you.

We will be focussing on:

  • Expanding the data available in Libraries.io to include projects hosted on GitLab and BitBucket
  • Creating feature parity among the 32 package managers currently supported
  • Looking to work alongside organisations in the scientific and research communities through 2017
  • Exploring how Libraries.io can assist those seeking to create a more sustainable future for essential open source software

Starting today I’ll be working full time on Libraries.io and its related open source projects, with Ben officially starting next month.

Finally we would like to thank, in no particular order:

Thanks!
