Not every story calls for puppets, and even fewer for puppets with detachable limbs

Meet Brody and Jasmine, two star-crossed lovers in Paco Jose Madden’s The Cannibal Diaries. How did Brody and Jasmine come to be? Read on for an interview with puppet maker Rob Nelson.

  • Hi Rob! You made the two puppet lovers being featured in The Cannibal Diaries by Paco Jose Madden. Boy did they turn out cool. What was your process?

Thank you! I was provided with awesome character inspiration notes that I really connected with, so I stuck close to those, and the design sketches for reference.

• How are these puppets different from the ones you normally make?

They have detachable body parts! So fun!

• What did you have to do differently, from a planning and building perspective, to make these puppets functional for the show?

Adding Velcro was the trick. I also considered using magnets.

• What creators have influenced your work?

Dan Garza from Fraggle Rock taught me puppetry. He was taught by Kevin Clash aka Elmo!

• What do you enjoy about the design process the most?
