The Thief in the Night

A song about fear.

Late at night when you’re tucked in your bed
He’ll come to you when he’s needin’ fed
He’ll creep inside you and terrify you
He’ll cut you down just like a thief in the night

Lock your doors and turn down your blinds
Calm your nerves and still your mind
He’ll paralyze you and slowly grind you
He’ll snuff you out just like a thief in the night

There’s a killer set free on the streets
He’ll draw you in his den when you’re feelin’ weak
He’ll hypnotize you, anesthetize you
He’ll cut your heart out like a thief in the night

Cry for mercy, say your prayers to your gods
Beg for your savior to undo his knots
You’ll kick and scream and watch him gleam
And then dissect you like a thief in the night

Fear will get you every time
It grows inside you and kills your mind
No more joy, no more sorrow
Like a thief it steals your last tomorrow

Just like a junkie squealing for a fix
Fear will make you squirm and split your wrists
And once it chokes you and provokes you
There’s no escape from this thief in the night

More than ever, fear needs to be put in perspective. Make that one of your new year’s resolutions.
