From Interns to Full-time: 5 Actionable Career Tips
Since the inception of our #InternAtCampaign internship program, we’ve seen an astounding 523 interns come through our virtual doors. These young, bright minds have each added unique value, bringing fresh perspectives and contributing to the success of various projects.
Our #InternAtCampaign internship program’s journey mirrors the challenges and evolution we’ve witnessed over the past few years. Initially, our program was conducted on-site, welcoming only a handful of interns and offering them an onsite experience to foster their skills. Then came the pandemic. But, with adversity came an opportunity to do more. Encouraged by our dedicated university partners and supported by the government’s Kampus Merdeka program, we’ve pivoted and grown. We’re proud to have supported 523 (and growing) students in gaining invaluable work experience through our virtual doors.
However, while our internship program offers a comprehensive experience of the professional world, transitioning to a full-time role or navigating one’s career after an internship is often a difficult and nerve-wracking process.
So, how do our interns make informed and impactful decisions to transition into their full-time professional lives effectively?
One way is our Interns’ Last Check-in Session, where their team leader, our People Manager, and I meet our interns during their last month with us. Here are five (5) actionable career tips we’ve shared over the years:
- 👨💻 Leverage ChatGPT for Career Insights: Treat ChatGPT as your on-call career coach. Start with the ‘Please act as my career advisor’ prompt, then share your CV, professional stories, and aspirations — while avoiding any private information. By harnessing AI, you can gain unique perspectives and feedback to supercharge your career journey. - 📑 Create a Career Plan: A defined career pathway can be your North Star, guiding your professional journey. Please write it down, review it, and be prepared to adapt it to changing circumstances. - 🔎 Identify 5 Dream Job Postings: Conduct an honest self-assessment by asking if you possess the necessary experience and skills. Even if you don’t meet every criterion, consider applying if you match a majority. Create an action plan to address any skills gap. Remember, it’s not always about ticking every box; sometimes, it’s about showcasing potential and willingness to learn.
- ⏲ Commit 15 Minutes Daily to LinkedIn: Dedicate this time to expanding your network, learning from thought leaders, and refining your profile. Engage actively by commenting on and sharing insightful posts from your connections and thought leaders in your field. Aim for a monthly post to share personal insights or professional experiences that build credibility. When HR professionals scan your profile, they should quickly discern your skills, passion, and aptitude for a role. Consistent and meaningful interactions on the platform will amplify your network, visibility, and impact.
- 💬 Craft 10 Compelling Professional Stories: Consider each interview a stage to share your professional milestones. Utilise the SCQA framework to articulate your stories, keep them concise (under 2 minutes), and always include measurable achievements. Such narratives not only help you stand out but also corroborate your expertise.
Transitioning from an internship to a full-time role can seem daunting. However, armed with the right tools, strategies, and mindset, we hope all our interns are ready to make their mark professionally.
