Coffee art by Kayva, who else?

Where are you from?

I’m from India and have lived all over the country. I’ve always loved travelling, immersing myself into the culture and lifestyle of my surroundings and I’ve never really stayed in the same city for long — life has taken me places!

What ended up bringing you to carwow in London?

I was looking for an exciting yet challenging role to begin my data career in the city. That’s when I found an ideal role advertised by carwow, I applied and got accepted! carwow was the perfect start to my career in London- there’s so much flexibility, you have the freedom to explore with very few restrictions and everyone really feels the ownership of the business. The learning curve is steep which I love, being ‘curious’ [one of the carwow values!] really helped me learn fast.

How did you end up in your role [the Queen of Data!]?

Well my university degree was actually computer science. I fell in love with coding and the power of code to allow you to bring new ideas to reality. But I was also very interested in business — growing up I saw my father run and grow his business which I found fascinating and I wanted to be like him. I don’t think I’m a Queen of Data but a data analyst who enjoys both analytical and commercial aspects of a business.

What challenges do you face in your role?

I work on the supply side of the product i.e. the dealership site and when it comes to driving their performance most of the issues can’t be tackled by just launching new tools. We need to play with the psychological effects of our product- how does what we do impact human behaviour?

How did you find the move to London?

I’m a big foodie and London is a food heaven. There’s so much variety, you can eat a new cuisine every night! Saying that, I do love cooking at home. My signature dish is risotto, I have been told by my Italian friends that my risotto is better than what they get back home.

How has working at carwow developed your career?

carwow has given me the confidence to believe in myself — I joined as an analyst and there was never a point when you’re speaking to management but you have to stop contributing because you’re new. You get to put forward your ideas. I’ve also learnt the skill of managing people. One of many other things I learnt from my manager is to lead through communication, vision and influence.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

Foodie, frank, adaptable

How would your family describe you in 3 words..?

Talkative, compassionate, messy

What about Rico, Mike and the rest of your product team?

Curious, approachable, thoughtful!

What 3 things would you bring with you to a deserted island?

A mobile with ability to talk to nearest and dearest, photograph of my family and a tree — I have to eat!

What would you say is your strongest personal quality?

Not being judgemental and always putting myself in someone else’s shoes- I try to see the positive side of everyone.

What is a skill you’d like to learn, and why?

Painting because I think it would be very satisfying and you can always be proud of it- you can look at it and say I’ve created that! I can draw and really enjoy that but I can’t paint.

What are you most proud of?

1. I’m quite proud of what I call my ‘catching power’- (of both people and technology!); I’m a quick learner and catch on fast which has really helped me to grow both personally and professionally

2. I’m proud of my understanding of English culture so far. I do feel homesick and miss Indian culture every now and again and sometimes I feel like I lack the British sense of humour so that’s hard.

Who’s your favourite person at carwow?

Adam [Head of Marketing Analytics]. I think of him like a ‘guru’, a person who you attribute all your learning and knowledge to. I would attribute all my knowledge and learning in my data career to him.

Any secret skills?

I speak many languages- English, Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Kannada and Bengali — some better than others. My Husband and I argue in different languages which is great for things you say that you might regret!

Last but not least, what is your favourite car?

The Rolls Royce Phantom. It has that royal feeling — they’re so classy!

Kavya rollin’ classy
