We know that applying for a job can be nerve-racking. When you’re applying, you might wonder:

  • What’s the company looking for?
  • How can I stand out from the crowd?
  • Am I even qualified for this job?

We talked to several Chime recruiters and gathered the following six tips for applying to a job (at Chime or anywhere!), so when you hit ‘Submit’ on your application, you can feel confident that you’re putting your best foot forward.

Be deliberate

From Justin (he/him/his), Principal Technical Recruiter

“Know which position you’re most interested in and apply for that role — it’s that simple. Being deliberate about the role you want — and tailoring your resume accordingly — goes a long way.”

Be selective and specific

Meagan (she/her/hers), Recruiter

“Ensure you’re applying to the role that maps closest to your experience and interests. If it’s not a 1:1 translation or your experience doesn't perfectly match up, that’s ok. Be sure to emphasize the skills you have that are most pertinent to the role. Avoid applying for multiple roles across different business lines — it might suggest you’re not sure what you’re looking for and a recruiter might not see a match as quickly.”

Get connected before applying

Jamie (she/her/hers), Product Recruiter

“Think about all the ways to get the warmest introduction possible before applying to a job. This could involve getting referred for the role, asking to have informal calls with people from the team you’re hoping to join, or attending a company event. Getting connected before you apply will help you stand out and give you more information about the company, too.”

Get creative

Kristen (she/her/hers), Benefits & Wellness Partner

“Your resume and LinkedIn need to catch our attention first, so get creative and show us the real you!”

Show off your portfolio (if you have one!)

Ted (he/him/his), Lead Design Recruiter

“For design and product candidates, always include a link to your portfolio and make sure it’s up to date. Don’t forget a password if you have one. Your work speaks for itself — so show us what you’ve got!” (For more portfolio tips, check out our blog post on the topic!)

Let us know why you’re interested

Amy (she/her/hers), Head of Midwest Recruiting

“Get specific and let us know why Chime is a top choice for you. Not only does doing so show us you are aligned with our mission, we love hearing stories of how you heard of Chime and why you decided to apply!”
