When our Chicago office decided to go to a baseball game together, they naturally had to have the debate: were they going to be a Cubs office or a Sox office? “We decided on the Cubs,” says Candice, a member of our team there. She’s a member of our small but growing group of Chicago Chimers and is excited to take Chime’s culture and foundations and put a Chicago spin on them.

Candice, who’s been a Chimer for almost a year, is on our Fraud and Risk Management unit. She fell into the fraud world and ended up loving it, and in fact, fraud and risk management has become a lifestyle for her and much of the team. They’re always sharing TV shows, podcasts, and movies about solving crimes or mysteries — and they get to do just that in their day to day.

When Jason Howard, one of our first Chicago hires, reached out to Candice, she wasn’t familiar with Chime. But then, more and more, she started to see ads for Chime and got to know our brand and product. “For me, I loved that Chime was relatable and down to earth as a brand,” Candice says. “I have family members who live paycheck to paycheck so I really understand the value we’re providing to members.”

It was when she talked to Brian Mullins, our VP of Risk, that Candice was sold on Chime. “Brian takes a different approach to fraud entirely — he really pushes us to understand the impact of risk on not just the company, but our members and our team, too. He always encourages us to look at the bigger picture, which has helped me broaden, deepen, and constantly reevaluate how I approach my work.”

Her work: Getting ahead of fraud

Candice’s role is as a Fraud Operations Manager specializing in investigations. She oversees all open investigations and also works closely with the mobile check deposit team. Day to day, she spends her time making sure that Chime is automating what’s called a ruleset. This means working with the risk intelligence and machine learning teams to make sure we’re flagging and addressing any risks or fraudulent activity — and automating that process with ‘rules’ to catch future behavior.

“In my role, I’m helping to prevent loss in any way; whether it’s reputational or financial,” she explains. To Candice, the fun part of her job is the fraudsters themselves: “I’m impressed by the fraudsters and how smart and strategic they can be, and I love figuring out how they think — and then getting ahead of them.”

Candice works cross-functionally with several teams across Chime, from compliance to analytics, data science to machine learning, and product to marketing. The fact that she and her team get to work so closely with many different Chimers keeps her day to day interesting — and her team sharp. “We wear a lot of hats on the risk team because we’re relied upon by so many folks across Chime,” she says. “It’s a great thing for the team because it motivates them to really know their stuff and make an impact on other Chimers’ work.”

Why risk matters: Our members

For Candice and the team at Chime, risk matters because our number one priority is our members, and risk of fraud or loss of any kind puts our members — and our company — in danger. “Our job is to help protect our members and make sure that they have a safe platform where they trust their money movement and actually achieve financial health,” Candice says.

“I love that my work is so aligned with our company’s values, especially our guiding value: to be member obsessed,” she explains. “We take our members into account in everything we do — and that’s how I believe it should be.”
