The Journey in Making Everyone a Scientist

As a tech company, relevant analysis of data is a vital part for us to take the business to the next stage and win the market. With more than 100 million app downloads, sharp intuition is slowly losing its charm as we need something solid to back our decision rather than “that’s what my guts told me at the time”. No, we don’t do that.
BI University
Based on that, in April 2018 Business Intelligence University was created with one big mission: making everyone in GOJEK a scientist. The selected group of people from various teams would have six weeks of mentorship from the Business Intelligence (BI) team to attract and utilize data to create a more effective decision-making process.
The initiative was inspired by AirBnb’s Data University initiative for its employees to empower them in making a data-informed decision.
Rebecca Rossellini, who is directly involved in managing the program, said the idea first came up as a solution to reduce the increasing number of requests to the BI team by giving everyone access to the data they requested and encouraged a self-service process.
The participants will first be informed on the data warehouse that we have in GOJEK and what kind of data could be extracted. Making data available for everyone is an important step for us to provide a learning experience for people in GOJEK as it will encourage them to independently translate data into an insight for decision making.
In the first two batches, 14 people were selected based on their proposal on what projects they would focus their soon-to-be-acquired skills to participate in the six weeks of mentorship with the BI team. In the seventh and eighth week, the participants would be asked to present their project and how the data processing skill helps their team.
The participants came from various teams in GOJEK including regional performance, fleet monetization, performance marketing to the growth teams. However, Rebecca said the third batch would be opened for more people compared to the previous batches.
“The level of interest to our program in this third batch exceeds our expectation so we will have more participants,” Rebecca told me, adding that more people are interested in the program as the first and second batches have shown good results in their work.
The Result
The increase of awareness on BI University has shown that the program is on the right track to push more data-based decision-making in GOJEK.
The GOJEK Regional Team member who participated in the latest batch had successfully created a dashboard for their specific region. It was a major improvement in terms of efficiency, as previously the BI team had to extract data requested by the regional team from the national dashboard.
The GOJEK Fraud Team has also benefited from the program, as they are now looking deeper into the data related to the suspension process. The team found several similar cases where suspension had been successfully appealed by the drivers, so they know what rule that needed to be improved.
Rebecca said the main goal is to make sure that people from other departments could have the same knowledge as those in BI Department.
“We want to scale our BI capability to other teams, we want them to be able to extract and analyze data,” she said.
GOJEK believes that learning culture is essential, therefore we want to adopt agile learning culture and encourage the worker to gain new skills every day. BI University is one of our programs to push everyone to the next level, in addition to other learning programs for our employees.
