But first, you might be wondering about who are the people behind the Data Science team at GOJEK, what we do, what problems we have solved, or even just a simple question: “what does a Data Scientist really do?”
If so, you’re on the right page because we have a lot of awesome things we want to share. What does a Data Scientist EXACTLY do?
Being a data scientist is way more than just collecting data and analyzing it. The job of a Data Scientist is a bit different than the job of those at the Business Intelligence team. The expected outcome from Data Science is an algorithmic model, and the scope that they’re doing is product engineering. Data Scientists focus on building and scaling out data product. So, the engineering component of a Data Science’s task is heavier compared to Business Intelligence.
For those of you who are still wondering what the difference between Data Science and Business Intelligence is, let’s take a look at their workflow ;)

But how does a Data Scientist solve the problem that occurs?
Well, it’s more like theoretical solving. Real Data Scientists will explore the mathematical approach that has been made by other scientists out there to solve the same problems that they’re currently facing.
Ok then, what does GOJEK’s Data Science team really do?
GOJEK’s Data Scientists do a lot more than just typing “import xgboost as xgb” all day.
We actually utilize data to be actionable insight that has the power to solve the problems we’re facing. Then, we process the data to optimize the app for our users, drivers, food vendors, masseuses and other 2 million people whose lives depend on our app, daily!
What are the problems that GOJEK’s Data Scientists have solved?
We know it’s such a hassle to coordinate with your drivers to pick you up in a large mall or train station, that’s why we want to help make your life easier! GOJEK’s Data Science team has come up with the Place of Interest (POI) feature that helps drivers directly arrive at that point without having you call or text them.

Or you might want to know how we decide which drivers to ‘allocate’ millions of times each day with the huge amount of data that will help optimize our decisions. The answer is simple. Well, sort of… We built the mighty Jaeger, a driver allocation system harnessing Machine Learning and real-time features to optimize multiple business objectives.
