What is UPSC?

UPSC: Union Public Service Commission is a well-known organization that carries entrance tests for selecting personnel in various central services in India.

The UPSC Full Form is the Union Public Service Commission.

The UPSC examination is one of the most challenging examinations in India. While Union Public Service Com is the prestigious and the major exam conducting authority.

The Union Public Service Commission organizes several exams which help to select deserving candidates for the Indian Government. It also organizes the CSE (Civil Services Examination), often referred to as the IAS examination. This examination is taken in 2 stages such as UPSC preliminary and mains. In this paper, the preliminary examination will be the objective-based type, and for the mains exam, the questions will be descriptive. It also involves essay-writing as well. UPSC also conducts various examinations for the particular post like IAS, IFS, IPS and many others.

The origin of Union Public Service Commission to its present importance is as follows:

The royal commission on superior civil service and the British members was framed in the year 1923 under the chairmanship of Lord Lee of Fareham and the government of India act further amended in the year 1924 on the bases recommended by the public service Commission.

The following is a list of some of the main recommendations made by Lee Commission:

  • 40% of future recruitment should be British
  • 40% of Indians should be directly recruited
  • 20% of Indians from provisional services should be promoted

Therefore, the first Public Service Commission came into existence on 1st October in the year 1926 under the chairmanship of Sir Ross Barker. It is therefore important to note that it was a limited body with advisory powers only and was not a powerful institution. Therefore, with the intervention of the Government of India Act of 1935, the Federal Union Public service commission known as the Union Public service commission or UPSC post-independence on 26 January 1950.
