Tech is the fastest-growing sector for the past 5 years

On Tech It Forward event held at Prasetiya Mulya University, Nadya Rachmawati, our Head of Learning, Culture, and Engagement at Mekari, talked about the reasons why the tech industry is a promising sector. “A country’s economic growth can be seen from its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Based on the existing data, of all the sectors in Indonesia that have contributed to GDP over the past 5 years, the Information and Communication Technology has been giving the highest contribution to our GDP,” Nadya explained.

Nadya also further explained the reasons what it means to be the fastest-growing industry:

Tech companies hire more

The rapid growth of the tech industry is parallel to the increased competition with other companies and the demand for high potential employees. Thus, companies in the tech industry frequently compete with other companies and open many job vacancies to get the best candidates.

Tech companies pay you higher and promote you faster

Many people also associate working in the tech industry with a more competitive salary than working in other industries. Tech companies tend to pay their employees higher because the numbers of qualified individuals are rare, while competition with other companies is increasing. Thus, they pay you higher to appreciate their employees and attract potential candidates to join them as well. In addition, the opportunity to get promoted in the tech industry is higher, even for individuals that have been working not too long ago. “Because in tech-industry, your career and salary growth do not depend on years of experience, but on your potential to grow and achievement in your job,” Nadya explained.

Tech companies adapt to the latest advancement

Since competition is tough, tech companies are forced to adapt to changes and the latest technology advancement to stay in the game. This means that the people working in tech companies are at the forefront of the latest technology.

Tech-industry is not only for engineers

Is the tech industry open for engineers only? The answer is no. There are many important positions available for graduates with non-engineering backgrounds. Nadya gave some examples of positions in the tech industry that don’t require a technical background:

a. UX Researcher: Responsible for conducting user research to discover user journeys in using a product. This position is great for you who are empathetic, a good listener and observant of human behavior and have Psychology or Marketing backgrounds.

b. Customer Success: Building good relationships with customers and ensuring customers achieve their desired outcome while using the product are the responsibilities of the Customer Success function. Whatever your major is, you can be a Customer Success professional if you love dealing and interacting with people.

c. Product Owner: If you have experience in entrepreneurship, software engineering or management consulting, this position is a great choice for you. The Product Owner is responsible to create a business strategy behind a product and specify its functional requirements and manage the launch of features.
