A little reminder that you are in control of your life and the path you take. Yes, life is throwing curve balls at all of us right now and some maybe more extreme or painful than others. But at the end of the day, you control how you react to them.

I had been feeling pretty lost for a while, and then I realized that it was because I felt as if I had lost control over my life, and the changes that happened around me. I felt anxious, trying to plan ahead and prepare for all the outcomes at the same time. My mood was a constant rollercoaster.

This season, working from home has been a different story. It’s more about preventing mental exhaustion rather than physical. We need to be more intentional when it comes to maintaining our mental health, and especially now, during these uncertain times that may ignite fear and anxiety.

I found one thing about the remote work. Even when the workday was over, it was hard for me to shut off and just relax in the same space, especially because I love my work, I do it and don’t always want to stop. And then call it a work-life imbalance.

Also, sometimes I went through spurts of really high focus and productivity. During those times I used to inevitably wonder: How long will this last? Does anyone else do that? Are your focus and productivity out of your hands?

OK now, Let’s talk about creating a healthy WFH work-life balance!

“There is no such thing as work-life balance. Everything worth fighting for unbalances your life.” — Alain de Botton

This time I thought instead of blaming the situation, do something for it. I did a few things that actually helped me get out of it. The idea was to establish good habits and self-care while I’m feeling good, so that when things are a little tougher, the self-care will be a second nature. This is not a new or ground-breaking approach, just one that I finally took to heart.

Apart from that, one thing I could do as a Mitsogian is simply dedicate my weekends just for relaxing, and I’m really grateful that I could do this at Mitsogo… And yes, we’ll probably end up checking emails, but that’s it for now! After taking this weekend — to completely relax, to spend limited time looking at screens, to change the scenery. I bet, we will feel refreshed and excited to “go” back to work.

And I tried incubating some new habits during this time — daily gratitude, a consistent schedule, regular breaks, and taking time to eat full meals (why is this one so hard when it is so easy yet important!), and spending time with people (safely) that bring me joy.

Remembering that, ultimately, I’m able to cope up with both my personal and professional life with such a small thought of mine — My Habit.

How do you balance your work from home and life?
