A fun company culture with physical benefits like aesthetic workspace, delicious meals or snacks, and cool gadgets for work isn’t enough to drive performance.

When people apply for a job, they also consider the company’s value, whether the value is suitable for them to grow their career or not. Because people also need to see how their work is contributing to something larger than themselves.

Recently, Pegipegi just released core values, Pegipegi 5 Essentials. These core values were formulated through a long process of thinking, reflection, and discussion within the company after what we`ve been through in a decade. The 10 years journey is not easy because Pegipegi has been through a lot of challenges.

Pegipegi`s employees called “Pegipegi People” believe that these 5 Essentials are key in ensuring that they stay true to themselves and will guide them together in their mission to make travel more accessible in Indonesia.

These values become a lighthouse in how they think, work, collaborate, and serve customers. And it is also expected to improve the quality of all of Pegipegi’s People so that they can step further together as a company to expand people’s access to travel. By this October, it has been almost 3 months since the company implemented Pegipegi 5 Essentials.

Head of People and Culture Pegipegi, Dewi Melani Setyaningrum the one who was involved in formulating the Pegipegi 5 Essentials said that she consistently tries to embody these values until now.

“I realized that I often failed too. And I need to remind myself each time, to keep moving towards these 5 Essentials that are important to improve not only our process towards our goals here but hopefully, the result of our goals,” said Melani.

One of the five core values she tries to highlight and implement the principles in her daily life and work is Make it Happen, Make it Sustain. Because not only is it going to be easier when all of us share the same values and principles, but also because knowledge is in groups — not individuals.

According to Pegipegi`s culture book, Make it Happen, Make it Sustain means:

Agile and able to adapt in any given situation are our virtues, as we’re able to think, act, and come up with solutions quickly. We own everything we do, yet we take calculated risks to seize every opportunity and create breakthroughs.”

There are three guiding principles regarding this value that Melani would like to share. These principles might be useful for everyone to grow further in the future, not just Pegipegi People’s life.

Guiding Principles 1: Get Things Done

It’s the motto of many companies and is mentioned in many self-improvement books, but what does it mean and how can we implement it?

Melani said we can start by:

Practice Self-Awareness

We have to become aware of the things that distract us. Make a list of things (eg; our phone, Instagram, Youtube, maybe personal problems!) that divert our attention and avoid them when we are trying to be more productive and be do-er.

Either keep them away in a safe place, turn off notifications or ask someone to help us hide them until work is done. We can also try some methods such as Pomodoro Technique or Eat The Frog method (when you do the most difficult task first during the day),

Be Resourceful & Choose Simplicity

Sometimes, we wait until it’s perfect, or we feel that we don’t have the ideal tools or resources. But we can always start with what we have if we have a clear breakdown of our goals, sub-goals, then action plans to achieve the goals.

Also, we often juggle endless conflicting ideas in our heads and that’s insane.

“Because the most productive people aren’t superheroes, they just focus on bringing more time and energy to fewer things. So, one question I continually ask myself is, what’s one thing I can do today to simplify my life?” Melani asked herself.

Prioritize Progress

Always, always, and always track the progress. She said that we can set up the right tracking method using specific tools or team meetings (check-ins or one on one) regularly. Make sure that progress is happening, and don’t forget to acknowledge yourself and those who helped you get there.

Guiding Principles 2: Have Ownership

What is having ownership? It is not as simple as ticking off all the points on the list of your job description. We can start by:

Own your Work

Firstly, we need to be proud of ourselves because having responsibility, means we gain trust and people believe in our capability. Next, we need to realize that no one else but ourselves is accountable for our tasks, therefore we must own our work and decisions and start to Make Things Happen.

Go Extra Mile by Quality

When we talk about going the extra mile, the simplest way to start is to think about the quality and have a mindset for improvement. Therefore, we can start by being thorough and meticulous in every task and always asking for feedback. It is important not only to ensure that we can Make it Happen but also to Make it Sustain.

Understand What Helps You

To be able to manage our work, we need your resources such as tools, budgets, and the team. To do well, we need to build proximity with them. As for tools and budget, understand the process and the fundamentals so we can prioritize and plan effectively.

As for our team, get to understand them, talk to them, and build genuine relationships. We can build an understanding together and help each other to be the best version of ourselves.

Guiding Principles 3: Have the Right Sense of Urgency

To Make Things Happen, one of the qualities that one needs is to have the right sense of urgency. We can develop this through:

Define Your Priorities

To create impactful action, most of the time we need to define our priorities. Melani usually categorizes her tasks into 4 types by using Eisenhower Matrix: Urgent & Important, Urgent & Not Important, Not Urgent & Important, and Not Urgent & Not Important.

This is one of the easiest ways to determine our priorities and focus on what matters.

Be Responsive during Crisis

Nobody wants a crisis to happen. But when it happens at work, being a professional means we need to respond immediately and identify the problem as soon as possible. Especially if it’s involving our reputation with our users and customers.

Over Communicating

Good communication requires repetition and getting ourselves available when needed. For example: when we work from home; inform our team about our working and collaboration hours, and update our slack status when we take leave/get sick/away from our laptop for a while.

When we take leave; coordinate the handover plan first, and put your phone number for an emergency/crisis.

“To sum up, never say too little, say more instead.”

“I hope these tips can be helpful for Pegipegi People or maybe our Medium`s readers. So we can continue to practice and remind each other about these values. Have a good day, everyone!” Melani closed her statement.
