Anyone who’s considering starting a business may wonder one thing: How hard is it to start one? After hearing many stories from Tokopedia sellers, this is one of the questions we’ve asked ourselves as well. Although there is a wide range of industries that sellers can tap into, such as food and beverages, fashion, tech, sports, and so on, how can they stay one step ahead and remain competitive?

Booyah Kids, a Tokopedia seller that specializes in Mom and Baby products, started its business in 2019. At that time, the minds behind Booyah were still figuring out their business model and finding ways to stand out from the competition. Coincidently, they were also new parents who were still trying to navigate the early stages of parenthood — all while feeling clueless, a lack of sleep, and feeling frustrated. In hindsight, however, they realized it wasn’t such a bad phase at all as it was the start of Booyah’s success in selling minimalistic, simple, and affordable children’s clothing!

Three years later, Booyah is sharing with us some pointers on how small businesses can make a splash in the competitive Mom and Baby market.

1. Being parents’ companions

As Booyah is a business that was founded by parents, it’s quite easy to understand what it is aiming for: To serve as a reliable companion for other parents. This simple goal inspires Booyah’s founders to always put themselves in the shoes of Indonesian parents and find out what they need.

In addition to innovating its products to serve parents, Booyah also ensures that its social media engagement is easy to digest by posting content that offers tips on parenting. It even stages activities in which parents can learn from children or parenting experts.

In short, Booyah aims to be more than a children’s store: it also strives to provide a safe, comfortable, and inclusive place for parents to learn, share, and shop!

2. Always trying to meet consumers’ needs

The eagerness to explore new products that can answer consumers’ needs is a must. We have so many markets and consumers to satisfy, and there are times when an innovation or product fails to capture the heart of consumers.

To keep up, Booyah looks for the market’s ever-changing preferences, needs, and interests, which can help it adapt. This has allowed Booyah to promptly provide consumers with the trendiest items, designs, or colors — even when customers are still forming their wants and needs for them.

In addition, Booyah emphasized that research and development (R&D) was not only done in the initial stages of its business. Instead, R&D remains a continuous process. For Booyah, it usually starts with looking at what kind of market or consumers it wants to target, which products best suit specific age ranges, how to best communicate with the market, and more. Moreover, R&D is also perfect for conducting quality development so that parents or children can be satisfied with Booyah’s products.

3. Surround your business with supportive people

There should be a saying that goes: It takes a village to run a business — because it’s so true! Running a business takes effort, and no one can do it alone. Hence, surrounding your business with the right and supportive people will help it grow and flourish.

Each seller in Tokopedia is paired with a Relationship Manager (RM) that can help them navigate Tokopedia’s ecosystem and ensure they’re able to scale up their business. The RM team also helps sellers in their R&D process, giving them insights into trends and consumer demands in Tokopedia.

“We hope Tokopedia and the RM team can continue to partner with Booyah so that we can grow, progress rapidly, and work together to find more ways to attract more parents and new markets to shop at Booyah.”

— Oky Octavia, one of Booyah’s founders.

These are just some of the tips and tricks Booyah has on how to stay ahead and stand out in a competitive market. As we’ve learned from Booyah’s story, businesses simply have to look at both their loyal and potential customers’ needs to serve them properly.

When it feels like everyone else has done something similar, your creativity and growth mindset as a business owner come to play. This is where you have to answer the question: How can I be different from the others?

Wishing our sellers and all aspiring entrepreneurs the best of luck and success!
