Every person has their own way, style, and preference for learning. For example, not everyone is a visual learner or an auditory learner. Noting that we have these different preferences, this era has certainly helped us as many learning platforms are available (and free!) for us to use. To name a few, we can learn from platforms such as YouTube, Google, social media, and more. But what about learning about subjects or topics that are not the simplest to digest, like technology?

This is actually a question Tokopedia Academy would like to answer. To reintroduce you to Tokopedia Academy: It is a learning ground for Indonesia’s future digital talents that aims to provide access for everyone to learn how to contribute to the development of Indonesia’s economy through technology. Knowing that learning technology virtually is not the easiest, the team shared how they managed to build the ecosystem.

Preparing future digital tech talents with the proper ammunition

Upon building Tokopedia Academy’s learning ecosystem, one of the most important points to figure out was what its target audience can learn about. To do so, the team conducted a deep analysis and search of what learning components can best suit the demands of these tech learners.

The process started by mapping out what subjects, topics, or materials the audience may be interested to learn, which media to use and may best suit the materials, and what subject is demanded most by the audience through internal and external research. Internally, Nakama in the tech, product, and product design departments were asked to provide insights and overall feedback on the Tokopedia Academy learning ecosystem. This same went for external audiences, who were asked to give feedback for the team to improve on.

After obtaining insights, the process continued with material testing. This testing allowed the team to assess whether the learning materials were easy to digest and able to represent the knowledge required in order to learn a specific tech subject and ultimately cater to the learning needs of future or existing digital tech talents. This process would repeat over time, as the tech industry evolves and advances.

As a strong believer in the spirit of gotong royong, which means everyone working together to achieve a common goal, Tokopedia Academy also actively collaborates with universities, learning institutions, and other educational players across the industry to ensure no learning gap is left unfilled and participants can always get the latest information, skills, and knowledge from Tokopedia Academy’s learning ecosystem.

The beauty of learning without limitations and barriers

The Tokopedia Academy team shared that the platform gained high enthusiasm from digital tech talents in Indonesia, and this was certainly rewarding for them! To illustrate, academy.tokopedia.com has been visited by more than 1 million people and Tokopedia Academy programs (START Summit Extension, START Talks, CX First Talks, NextGen, and more) have gained more than 10,000 participations in 2022 so far.

Beyond providing limitless learning opportunities for tech talents, the dream was also to help them advance in their careers in the tech industry. For instance, participants of Tokopedia Academy’s Product Design Academy and DevCamp programs were able to learn and be taught first-hand by Tokopedia tech and product design experts. Once they finished their programs, most of the alumni were given a chance to work as full-time employees at Tokopedia.

On a side note, Tokopedia Academy through its women-in-tech community was also able to gather and empower more female tech practitioners to join the industry. To do this, Tokopedia Academy created a women’s technology summit to empower women, uplift each other, and share insights about the role of women in the realm of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), known as START Women in Tech.

In its latest edition, the summit featured more than 36 women speakers with different specialties in tech, was participated by more than 95,000 registrants, and collaborated with more than 70 community, media, university, and student partners. The summit was also opened and supported by Mira Tayyiba (Secretary-General of the Ministry of Communications & Information), Ir. Suharti MA Ph.D. (Secretary-General of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research & Technology), and Mr. Jamshed M. Kazi (United Nations Women’s Representative in Indonesia and Liaison to ASEAN).

START Women In Tech 2021

This is only a fraction of what the team plans for the many years ahead! Learning should be a process that everyone can enjoy and participate in easily without barriers. With this in mind, and also driven by the 9in9 movement that’s initiated to support President Joko Widodo’s instruction on the national digital transformation in 2030, Tokopedia Academy invites you to get on board, grow your skills and knowledge on tech, and be Indonesia’s next outstanding digital talent!
