Education comes in different forms. For many, the term ‘education’ is closely related to academic curriculums or formal education such as school and University. However, there is more to education than we know, and it doesn’t stop after you get your degree.

Education is learning skills and knowledge, which does not necessarily need a specific place or time limit. As a Nakama (a name for Tokopedia employees), it is within our daily routine to learn new information, knowledge, and skills, whether from our leaders, team, users, or sellers.

As a digital platform that aims to facilitate new business owners to start their business, Tokopedia is responsible for ensuring new sellers are aware of all the necessary information as this will help them operate the platform to maximize their sales. Behind all this, our Merchant Education team plays a crucial role, and we are delighted to introduce you to them.

Meet our Merchant Education Team

The team of eight Nakama has a mission to help sellers be successful in growing their business in Tokopedia. Their primary role includes providing relevant information and timely education that sellers need at different life stages of their business, in various formats and channels.

Moreover, their vision in 2021 is to support sellers with personalized education based on their business stages to grow and effectively operate. To do so, the Merchant Education team did a closer integration with seller platforms and tools, strengthened their curriculum (both in text and video format), and doubled down on channels that work. In addition, the team finds that showcasing more success stories from other sellers will empower new sellers to maximize their potential.

Getting to Know What They Do Daily

In summary, there are two tasks that the team focuses on each day, which is curriculum development and improving learning mechanisms.

First, Curriculum Development revolves around content development. The team aims to deliver cohesive seller education to support sellers maximize their growth in Tokopedia by developing articles, videos, and other content formats. On top of content to sellers, the team also leads internal socialization of Tokopedia features and products to the Category team — RM and RGX.

Second and last, our sellers can choose from a total of six learning mechanisms to learn about our features and how to grow their business. Those mechanisms are explained further in the following:

1.Pusat Edukasi Seller is an online education hub. Sellers can get personalized content recommendations based on their profile (via integration with seller platform and tools) and easily find content based on their needs. Furthermore, they can also sign-up for offline or online classes, sign-up to the Keluarga Tokopedia seller community, and connect with other sellers.

2. Webinar — Online seminars or webinars are a great way to have a two-way interaction with our sellers and cover various new feature launches. We usually utilize platforms such as Google Meet or Zoom.

3. Obrolan Seller Live Class Series — Each week, we have a 30-minutes live class in Tokopedia Play (Tokopedia’s in-app streaming platform). The session invites guest speakers to share their success stories and conduct a Q&A session on our features.

4. Monthly Newsletter — The newsletter provides exclusive content (content that isn’t covered in our articles, such as an exclusive interview with top sellers), Tokopedia latest update, and a recap of our features or products.

5. Social Media — Collaborating with our Social Media team, we deliver content on features and product education on Instagram, Facebook, and Youtube Tokopedia Seller and establish close relations with our seller community.

6. Advancement & Acquisition Class — Before the pandemic, both classes are held offline. The Advancement Class provides sellers a chance to gather with other and existing sellers. In the session, the Merchant Education team will deliver different content based on the targeted segmentation of the sellers. As for Acquisition Class, it is a way to support the PPGR team in strategic collaboration with the government to acquire MSMEs to migrate from offline to online.

So far, the team has held more than 190 webinar classes, 93 Obrolan Seller episodes, 70 offline events in 32 cities, and over 1.6 million sessions with 790 thousand visitors on the Pusat Edukasi Seller each month.

Helping Our Sellers to Reach the Stars

So, you can see that education in our sense of the term is quite far from what you would commonly assume. But, with the #FocusOnConsumer spirit that the team upholds, more than 11 million sellers in Tokopedia are able to grow and excel in each of their business life stages. It is in our sole purpose to ensure that our sellers have a positive experience in starting their business with Tokopedia, as they inspire and support one another to do the same.
