If you are one of the millions of sellers on Tokopedia, you’ll frequently encounter a critical decision when accepting a new order — how to efficiently ship your package. As a seller, you have two primary options at your disposal: requesting a courier to pick up the package from your shop, or dropping it off at the nearest location convenient for you. Tokopedia offers an extensive range of courier services, and nearly all of them provide drop-off options for sellers.

For couriers that offer drop-off services, they maintain locations that span numerous districts throughout the country, to ensure accessibility to as many sellers as possible. While this setup may seem convenient, it leads to a vital question for sellers: where should they drop off their packages?

The challenge that sellers often experience when trying to locate the nearest drop-off point and gather this information on their own is a considerable challenge. What should be a straightforward process becomes potentially exhausting and time-consuming for sellers, especially when they lack proper guidance on the nearest drop-off locations. This issue is poised to become even more critical as new drop-off regulations take effect this quarter and the number of sellers utilizing this option continues to rise.

To address this challenge, the Logistics team is introducing a feature called “drop-off maps.” In essence, this feature is a dedicated page that empowers sellers to easily identify the nearest drop-off location relative to their shop’s location. We understand the need to deliver this information to sellers most clearly and interactively, and from our perspective, the most effective method is through the use of a map page. By having the drop-off maps feature, we aim to streamline the shipping process for our sellers, ensuring they can efficiently and confidently drop off their packages.

The drop-off maps enable sellers to interactively search for the nearest drop-off location to their selected shop location. Some of the key features offered by the drop-off maps include:

  1. Dynamic Maps: Sellers can interact with the map by zooming in or out, dragging the map, and more.
  2. Choosing Shop Location: Multi-location sellers can select the shop location they want to check, and the drop-off maps will automatically update the map and all the relevant data.
  3. Route Guidance: Sellers can see the route to the drop-off location from their shop by clicking the “Lihat Rute” button, which will redirects them to Google Maps.
  4. Filter by Districts & Couriers: With numerous couriers and districts to choose from, sellers can narrow down their search by specific courier or district.

Within the map, sellers can also access details of each drop-off location, including address, phone number, and operational hours. It’s important to note that sellers can only look up drop-off locations in the same city as their shop location. For example, if the shop is in Jakarta Pusat, the seller will only see drop-off locations located in Jakarta Pusat.

How the team managed to launch the feature

The most significant challenge in developing this feature was obtaining up-to-date drop-off location data from all the couriers integrated with Tokopedia, ensuring it accurately reflected the current field conditions. This was critical to avoid misinformation, such as presenting closed or unavailable drop-off locations. To overcome this challenge, we collaborated with our 3PL partners to maintain this data through a new API integration. This partnership allows us to receive updates on field changes, including the opening or closing of drop-off points.

Despite the challenges and complexity, the team successfully launched the drop-off maps in just three months, right before the new drop-off regulations came into effect, and with no major bugs. This achievement demonstrates that collaboration can help us overcome difficulties and achieve significant milestones without compromising the quality of our offering towards our consumer.

A big shout-out to the dedicated team members whose efforts were instrumental in developing and uncovering innovative solutions for Drop-Off Maps:

Where we are headed next

As the new drop-off regulations become nationwide, the drop-off maps will expand their coverage accordingly to assist sellers in complying with the new drop-off regulation. During the gradual release in the past few weeks, we received valuable feedback from stakeholders, including the sellers themselves, who have been highly supportive. This feedback has created a mutually beneficial relationship between sellers and Tokopedia.

As we committed to delivering the best we can, our journey does not end here. The entire team is closely monitoring the feature and is already planning an improvement agenda to enhance the experience for both sellers and Nakama, considering all the feedback and inputs from all the stakeholders.

Stay tuned for more updates and improvements on drop-off maps!
