Guide to Finding Your Strengths and How to Use Them

It is 4:30 pm on Friday. You just walked out of your quarterly coaching and evaluation session with your manager. Like many sessions before, your manager wrote several areas of opportunities and the expected time of improvement in your evaluation. You looked at the same old review and wondered, “How come it only stated my weaknesses? What did I do well? Why can’t I be selected for projects that I am good at? How do I find a career that can maximize my strengths?

What is strength? Many people have different interpretations of what strength is. Some people believe strength stands for the physical ability to create muscular tension like what Todd Hargrove stated in his article on Bettermovement.org. Others believe that strength stands for your capacity and ability to perform under high stress like what some describe as grit. In truth, they are all correct. According to the Webster dictionary, Strength means a state of strong either mentally, physically, or morally. Everyone interprets this term differently, but in my perspective, strength is the ability to perform well at a specific task consistently.
