Research & Startup Culture @ IIT Mandi
Like other IITs, IIT Mandi is also playing its role of doing research and serving the society.
IIT Mandi ranked 6th among all IITs in Nature Index based on the number of publications in 2015–16 and 3rd after IIT Bombay and IIT Kanpur on the basis of publications per faculty. Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy are two important modes through which the faculty maintains contact with the frontiers of knowledge and the latest developments in technology.
The institute has a total of 925 international and national, peer reviewed 2016. Some recent achievements by research groups:academic year journal publications up to
- Bird Activity Detection (BAD) challenge (conducted by the Machine Listening Lab of Queen Mary University, London), the submission from the Multimedia Analytics and Systems (MAS) lab at IIT Mandi regarding this interesting study won the Judge’s award.
- Indigenous Technology for Next Generation IC Industry
- 3 students from BTech EE Final year won 3rd prize in the worldwide 2016 Myron Zucker Design Contest organized by the IEEE Industrial Application Society. Their entry was based on their MTP “A Non-Intrusive Air-Gap Torque Method for Efficiency Estimation of Induction Machines”, guided by Bharat Rajpurohit.

IIT Mandi, was selected as one of 18 sites across the country for setting up technology business incubators under the government’s ‘Start-Up India’ initiative. Incubator named “IIT Mandi Catalyst” was inaugurated by Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala in May 2016. Right from the beginning, Catalyst has started working for improving startup culture at IIT Mandi. It has also funded a company by recent graduates of IIT Mandi — Ankush Jindal& Siddharth Gangal . Some other companies are currently in exploration phase and catalyst is looking forward to fund them in near future
