Bison are often seen in movies and are associated with the American West. These majestic animals are found mainly in state parks and nature reserves, but they used to roam all over North America.

Here are a few interesting facts about bison that you might not know.

1) Two Distinct Species

There are two main species of bison — European bison and American bison. Though similar, they differ in physical characteristics and behavior.

2) Heaviest Land Animal

The bison is the heaviest land animal in North America. Males can often weigh up to 2,200 pounds and measure up to 6 feet tall.

3) Group Behavior

Bison are social animals that live in herds. These herds usually have a complex social structure, often including a dominant male and various subgroups of females and juveniles.

4) Impressive Speed for Size

Despite their large size, bison are quite agile and can run at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. Bison are also skilled swimmers.
