At Dropbox, we’re all about enabling seamless collaboration, and one of the best ways to make this happen is through Android development. Android engineer Mike Nakhimovich told us how his team’s work is changing the way Dropbox is able to help people around the world work better together.

Can you tell us a little about your education and journey to Dropbox?

I went to a public high school in New Jersey, and my calculus teacher was one of the first students of Penn State’s computer science department. He ended up creating a CS curriculum for us. By the time I went to college, I had three years of experience learning to code. It gave me a jump start to my future career. I’ve leveraged being a software engineer to allow me to work in several different industries: healthcare, logistics, finance, media, and e-commerce.

What work are you most proud of in your Dropbox career?

I started on the Dropbox premium team and have been spending time making improvements to our multimedia playback and commenting systems.

What’s your favorite thing about Android engineering?

The community, which is incredibly welcoming and continuously working together. As an example, we are currently collaborating with Google and New York Times engineers in open source projects. The openness of Android as a platform has had a wonderful effect on community collaboration.

Why is Android engineering an important part of Dropbox?

Dropbox is a global company in an ever changing world. Users expect always-on connectivity to their most prized data. I’m proud to be a part of the team that helps users collaborate on billions of devices.

How have you seen your team grow or change during your time at Dropbox?

When I started, we had one mobile engineer in New York. Today we are up to nine, with more growth planned. It’s great to see Dropbox invest in mobile, particularly in New York.
