This year, our employee resource group Latinx@ changed “Hispanic Heritage Month” to “Latinx Heritage Month” to recognize the intersectional experience of being Latinx.

So, for Latinx Heritage Month this year, we chose the theme “Mejor Juntos/ Better Together” to celebrate and uplift all Latinx communities: Black, Indigenous, Undocumented, Immigrant, LGBTQ+, Women, and more. We encourage you to acknowledge the salient contributions and beauty that Latinx and Immigrant communities bring to this country. Our intersectional identities are what make us better together. During the month, we’ll be asking members of Latinx@ what the theme means to them.

Q: What is your name, what office do you work out of, and how long have you been at Dropbox?

A: I am Daniel Urcuyo. I work out of the Austin office, and I have been at Dropbox since March 2018.

Q: What’s your current role in helping make the world work better?

A: I am currently a renewal account executive. My job is to ensure that our existing customers are happy to continue the partnership with Dropbox at time of renewal. I guide them through this process while trying to find growth opportunities within their team.

Q: In your time at Dropbox, what’s something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of?

A: My biggest accomplishment to date has been starting the renewals team from ground up with my team. I was the first hire on the USA team and have been part of creating the internal processes and playbook for this team. In just two quarters, we’ve been able to significantly increase our retention rate while keeping our customers happy. This brings value not to only our team, but to Dropbox as a whole as we’re helping retain our existing user base while providing more delight to our customers.

Q: What does this year’s theme, “Mejor Juntos/ Better Together,” mean to you?

A: For me, “Mejor Juntos/ Better Together” is not only a Dropbox value, but a life motto. I was raised with the mentality that no matter where you come from and no matter who you are, there is always something valuable you bring to the world. “Better Together” means working in an environment where everyone is treated equally, resulting in more (and better) work getting done. This is because every single person is able to collaborate and contribute to build a better community.

Q: What topic do you feel is top of mind for you and the Latinx community, and why?

A: Access to education. Coming from a very poor country like Guatemala, where the literacy rate is just 75%, I would like to see this become more top of mind for the Latinx community. An increase in the literacy rate by even just a few points at a time would have a very meaningful impact on the future of our communities.

Q: What are you most excited for this year’s Latinx Heritage Month at Dropbox?

A: I can say that I am a very proud Latino. I love promoting our culture and love having the opportunity to represent our culture across Dropbox. Coming from Guatemala, I really enjoy representing both the Latino culture in addition to my home country.
