From September 26–28th, 2018, the Dropbox team attended the Grace Hopper Celebration(GHC) in Houston, TX, the largest gathering of women technologists! We had a blast meeting attendees and sharing our commitment to increasing the number of women in tech. We’re excited to share some of the highlights!

The Booth & the Swag

This year Dropbox held down booth #5132, complete with swag and smiling faces.

“ I just wanted to create something fun to attract the many unique women who attended the conference this year. Through ambiguous faces of women and a playful color palette, we created an inviting quirky space to spark interest in learning what all Dropbox has to offer.”

-Lori Novak, from our Black Ops team, who led the design for this years booth on how she came up with the look and feel.

Our GHC ’18 Team

Twenty-five Dropboxers were part of the GHC’18 team, including engineers, recruiters, and our executive sponsor, Tony Lee, VP of Application Engineering. Dropboxers really enjoyed meeting conference attendees, discussing our teams and opportunities, and sharing more about life inside Dropbox. They also had the chance to attend conference sessions and events to network, learn, and connect with fellow technologists.

Two Dropboxers from the Cloud Engineering team presented and shared their learnings this year. Sammy Steele discussed building a large-scale distributed search engine, and Olga Kechina shared lessons learned from running metadata storage at petabyte scale.

Additionally, the team bonded over an employee dinner, giving Dropboxers from different offices and teams a chance to connect with each other and enjoy some Texas BBQ.

Special Breakfast with Dancakes

To kick off the second day of the conference, the Dropbox team hosted a Rise & Shine Candidate Breakfast. The delicious breakfast spread included custom pancakes made by proud Dropbox for Business client Dancakes! Pancake art requests were taken — check out the video to witness the art of the Dancake!

In addition to the breakfast, our team met with candidates throughout the conference — at the booth, during sessions, in line at Starbucks, and even at the airport!

Takeaways & testimonials

Our team had a wonderful time at this year’s Grace Hopper Celebration. We’re excited to continue to connect with and learn from the GHC community!

Words from a few Dropbox GHC attendees:

  • “It was incredible to be in the presence of so many phenomenal women! It’s empowering and liberating to meet women like yourself and encourage one another and share stories of success and failures.”
  • “I met so many incredible and inspirational young women this year, and I hope (and expect) that we can get many of them to come join us next summer or fall as either interns or new grads! It makes me feel really excited about our future. :)”
  • “It was really energizing talking to so many candidates who are so excited about Dropbox, and also great to spend time with the recruiting team and build empathy for the challenges they face. I hope to attend again!”

We’re already counting down the days until GHC’19. In the meantime, we’re excited to celebrate women in tech year-round.

See you next year!
