For Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM), from September 15 to October 15, we are highlighting the contributions made by members of the Latinx community in creative fields all over the world, with the theme: “Celebrating Latinx Creative Energy.” Our employee resource group Latinx@ will host activities in our offices that will shine a light on the creative expressions of Latinx and Hispanic figures, celebrate the diversity within the community, and inspire everyone to release their creative energy. In honor of HHM, we’ll be featuring Dropboxers and sharing their stories and what the month means to them.

Q: What is your name, what office do you work out of, and how long have you been at Dropbox?

A: My name is Ryan Garcia. I work out of the San Francisco office, and I’ve been a Dropboxer since December 2015.

Q: What is your current role at Dropbox?

A: I am a customer success manager (CSM), which essentially means that my primary function is to ensure that some of our largest enterprise customers are having a successful Dropbox experience overall and getting a lot of value from their investment.

Q: Anything that you have done/accomplished at Dropbox that you’re proud of?

Last year, during HHM, I provided the guitar track (I’m a flamenco guitarist) for our All-Hands meeting, as well as performed live in our Tuck Shop later that month.

Q: Why did you decide to join Dropbox?

A: I chose to join Dropbox because I was (and still am) super excited about the future of our company, our amazing company culture, career/personal growth opportunities, and the ease of use of our product.

Q: What surprised you most about Dropbox when you joined?

A: How awesome the people are and everyone’s willingness to work together to get things done.

Q: What does creative energy mean to you?

A: Creative energy for me means feeling inspired, energized, and in my groove. From this space, great ideas and creations can flow with ease.

Q: How do you unleash your creative energy in your day?

A: As a daily practice, I like to start out my early mornings with a little meditation and playing my flamenco guitar for an hour prior to coming into the office.

Q: What are your hobbies? Or what can we find you doing outside of work?

A: I’m a proud father of two young boys (ages 1 1/2 and 4 1/2), and I love spending time with my wife and family. As a flamenco guitarist, I frequently perform at weddings and private events throughout the Bay Area.

Q: Any accomplishments you’re proud of outside of work?

A: All of the above.

Q: What is something interesting about you that not a lot of people know?

A: I lived in Sevilla, Spain, for seven years studying flamenco guitar with a legendary gypsy flamenco family.

About Hispanic Heritage Month

Q: What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?

A: For me, HHM is an opportunity to recognize and appreciate my Latino heritage and ancestry even though I was born and raised here in CA. It’s always great to celebrate our family roots and on-going traditions.

Q: If you’re comfortable, do you mind sharing your background?

A: My family ancestry on my father’s side is Spain and Mexico and Portugal and Germany on my mother’s side.

Q: Are there any past or present-day figures in your life?

A: My wife and kids are my heroes who I celebrate daily. And my flamenco guitar teachers in Spain, Juan and Paco del Gastor (both guitarists shown in this YouTube video starting at 1:15), are also important mentors, teachers, and inspirations in my life.

Q: This year’s theme is about celebrating LatinX creative energy, and recognizing the creative contributions from all over Latin America. Do you have a favorite creative?

A: My teachers in Spain, Juan and Paco del Gastor.
