If you’ve ever been in love, you’ve only experienced half of what Gollum and The Ring do in their 478-year-long love story. Perhaps the most underrated couple in modern literature, we could all stand to learn a little something about passion from this hot and heavy pair from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. Here are just a few of the many reasons why Gollum and The Ring are the very definition of #RelationshipGoals:

Looks aren’t everything

Gollum and The Ring prove that the healthiest relationships aren’t based solely on good looks. After casually dating for some time, Gollum and The Ring start to get more serious and comfortable with each other. As a result, Gollum lets himself go physically. Regardless, his connection with The Ring remains as strong as the day they met for the first time in the river, proving their love is not a superficial one. And although The Ring is smaller than average, Gollum cares less about its size, and more about its integrity and how well it performs when he’s in the mood to use it.

Using pet names such as “my precious”

Instead of addressing his lover as “babe” or “sweetheart,” Gollum calls The Ring “my precious,” quite possibly the most romantic pet name of all time. By using a term of endearment instead of just “The Ring,” Gollum never fails to make The Ring feel special, like it’s the center of his universe.

Knowing how to keep the spark alive

A relationship built on strong, effortless chemistry is exactly the kind of relationship to strive for. Despite being together for hundreds of years, Gollum and The Ring manage to remain in the honeymoon phase for the entire duration of their relationship. Though they occasionally butt heads like in any relationship with two headstrong romantics, Gollum’s attraction for The Ring never dwindles. Haters would call it manipulation and toxicity, but Gollum and The Ring’s relationship proves to be one of magnetic love and consistently riveting intensity.

Being extremely protective

The Ring shows its love and affection for Gollum by ensuring his protection from any impending danger from the physical world. Not only does The Ring protect Gollum by rendering him invisible, it also provides him protection in the form of shelter in a deep cavern within the picturesque Misty Mountains. The Ring takes care of Gollum’s every need, affording him the privilege of living in a huge, secluded mansion where he has access to as much raw fish as he wants — that means sushi for breakfast, second breakfast, lunch, and dinner — what a luxury.

Bringing out the best in each other

One of the telltale signs that you’ve found your soulmate is that they always bring out the best in you. By this reasoning, it’s clear that Gollum and the Ring are meant to be together because The Ring inspires Gollum to become a better person. Before meeting his other half, Gollum was nothing but an ordinary stoor hobbit named Sméagol. But when The Ring comes into Gollum’s life, it transforms him entirely — mind, body, and soul. Because of their relationship, Gollum’s life is prolonged five and a half times that of an average stoor hobbit, a beautiful metaphor for how love has the superhuman power to give you life.

Remaining faithful through thick and thin

Even though The Ring keeps wanting to go back to its ex and first love, Sauron, and hops around from Hobbit to Hobbit in the process, Gollum remains faithful and never stops pursuing The Ring. Though Gollum struggles with feeling imprisoned and frustrated, his lust, possessiveness, and unconditional love helps him power through this hurdle. Even after their bitter, messy breakup, The Ring ultimately finds its way back to Gollum. But in a tragic, twisted end to their love story that rivals the iconic conclusion of The Notebook, Gollum and The Ring are reunited at Mount Doom before they fall to their deaths in the fires of the volcano, mimicking the fiery nature of their passionate relationship.

An unlikely pair that proves that love conquers all, Gollum and The Ring’s perfectly imperfect relationship gives us a timeless love story that inspires us all to step up our romance game. Consider yourself lucky if you can find a love that comes anywhere close to the intense connection that Gollum and The Ring share. There is nothing more romantic than following in the footsteps of this couple and their fiery passion.
