Fourth Chapter The Children

The next day, after completing his chores, Bud took his fishing pole and tackle and walked out like he was going fishing, but his destination was not the Rio Grande River. Instead, it was the old shopping center on the east side of town along what had once been US Highway 160.

The Highway was long gone; the state of Colorado-New Mexico had abandoned it generations before, but the decaying hulks of the big box stores where the children’s ancestors had shopped remained. Once they had salvaged the usable materials. There was no reason to go back to the ruined temples of a civilization…
