What I am Reading

With the holiday break and a week on the beach in Mexico, I’ve been on a bit of a reading tear of late.

One of my goals this year is to read at least 20 books; at least five must have some professional application. I think that will create some measure of balance.

While on vacation I decided to read something that was beach worthy and another a bit more serious.

The beach one was easy: the new Jack Reacher novel by Lee Child — Night School. I’ve learned that when at a loss for a book and headed anywhere near a beach — Jack Reacher will never let you down. Good, mindless fun entertainment.

Next up was the new Michael Lewis book, The Undoing Project. If you’re a Michael Lewis acolyte, like I am, then you probably agree that the man can do no wrong. I really enjoyed this one, though I felt like it was a bit longer than necessary (my father-in-law said to me once that he felt like half of today’s books could be condensed down to a New Yorker article. I kind of agree. Anyway, this book though not quite up there with The Big Short and Moneyball, was still an interesting and provocative read. The fact that the two protagonists were Israeli made it that much more interesting for me, personally.

The book I am presently reading, The Lost City of the Monkey God by Douglas Preston, might be my favorite. I love a good travelogue and hunts for lost artificats/shipwrecks/cities/civilizations sits pretty high on that list. To top if off, I have actually traveled to Honduras, a trip I enjoyed greatly, which makes this book that much more interesting to me personally. I am only about halfway through and so far it gets two thumbs up. Amazon liked it too, naming in a January book of the month. So, that is what is on the present docket. Next up will likely be The Most Dangerous Place on Earth — a book that about troubled teens that takes place in Mill Valley, CA of all places. Can’t see how I can pass on a book that takes place at my kid’s own high school.

But beyond that, I am completely open to recommendations. Anyone?
