As every parent knows, being fully present for both family and work requires a significant balancing act. At Thumbtack, we believe that parents don’t have to choose between being great caregivers and great professionals. Crucially, we also believe they need real support in order to thrive.
Most of the leaders in our company are proud parents, which means we know first-hand what it’s like to get a call from school during a meeting or have a child home sick. That’s why we’ve continued to expand policies and benefits that help parents prioritize time with their children — such as our virtual-first workplace, flexible PTO, annual company-wide shutdown, and international travel policy. Employee feedback consistently tells us that the flexibility parents find at Thumbtack empowers them at work and home. In fact, we were just named one of the Best Workplaces for Parents in 2023.
We’re thrilled that parents consistently stay with us post-leave: 92% of Thumbtack employees who go on parental leave return to work. And even more honored to have a thriving community of parents across the company: in fact, 35% of our employees are active members of our Parents Employee Resource Group (ERG). Working remotely allows our team to be home for milestone family moments, and the community parents find at work allows them to celebrate and validate the joys (and absurdities) of life with kids throughout the day.

Parental Leave
New employees in the U.S. are eligible on day one for our parental leave benefits, which include up to 12 weeks of fully-paid, job-protected parental leave in a designated 12-month period for bonding with a newborn, newly adopted child, or a child newly placed through foster care. We also offer up to 8 additional weeks for birthing parents with hands-on support in creating phase-out and phase-in plans.
Miscarriage Bereavement Leave
Up to five days of fully paid time off for bereavement leave due to the loss of a loved one, including for pregnancy loss or miscarriage.
Maven Fertility Benefits
Our partnership with Maven provides a lifetime maximum reimbursement of $30,000 per U.S. employee ($10,000 per year) for adoption, surrogacy, fertility treatments, egg/sperm freezing, donor egg/sperm, and surrogate services. The platform offers parenting classes, mental health benefits, and a virtual care team (i.e. nutritionist, doula, lactation specialist).
Parental Involvement Leave
Parents at Thumbtack may take up to 40 hours of leave annually to manage the realities of life with kids. This can include finding a school or childcare provider, enrolling children in school or childcare, participating in activities, addressing school or childcare provider emergencies, or being asked by a teacher for parent involvement in a child’s behavioral plan.
Forma Annual Stipend and Dependent Care FSA
We provide $1,000 annually per U.S. employee towards childcare or child-related expenses. In addition, U.S. employees can contribute up to $5,000 per year to an FSA that can be used for childcare for children 13 and under.
Family Caregiver Leave
All employees may take up to four weeks of fully-paid, job-protected leave within a designated 12-month period in order to care for a spouse, child, or parent with a serious health condition.
We believe that providing parents with flexible work and comprehensive benefits is an essential first step in supporting families. But we don’t stop there: we’re also proud members of Moms First, a coalition of companies that works with advocacy partners to campaign for paid leave, child care, and direct payments to mothers at the state and federal level.
