“Thumbtack is made of amazingly talented engineers who will also support and mentor you.”

Emily Fujimoto, Mobile Engineer, joined Thumbtack in June 2015 as a new graduate. She has two cats, Katya and Natasha Romanov, and has seen and helped the mobile team learn and grow throughout her time here. Here are her thoughts on development and team.

I joined Thumbtack as a new grad because during my interviews I noticed a culture of learning and development that I hadn’t experienced during my internships elsewhere. When I was interning at a big name company before graduating, I was hesitant to ask people questions because I felt like a very small part of something huge. There was a culture of being self-taught and I didn’t want to waste anyone’s time. I would spend hours trying to figure something out on my own, but that’s not the impression I got during the interview process and has held true to this day.

People here are willing to ask questions and help answer them. On several occasions I’ve asked for help in a public forum, and people have actually gone out of their way to support me. That collaborative culture means a lot to me. Every great tech company will say they have the best talent, but Thumbtack is made of amazingly talented engineers who will also support and mentor you. I’ve been here since 2015 and have seen that culture grow with the company. Coming in as a new grad and now being able to pay it forward to my new colleagues is extremely rewarding and I’m excited to continue to do that.

That culture is also how I developed into my current role. When I first joined, I was doing back end work for a mobile team, but my mentor at the time mentioned that we needed more Mobile Engineers. I was interested, and my manager made space for me to pick up Android on the job. I started doing more full stack work and have been able to explore several teams since then. This isn’t an uncommon story at Thumbtack. There’s a lot of opportunity to pivot into other teams and learn new skills, and many engineers here have similar stories to mine.

We also have fun working here! I organize and champion our Games “Tacktivity Group” which meets every other week to play a different role-playing game. There are tons of groups like this at Thumbtack that focus on bringing people together through a shared hobby. The games group is a nice way for people who are shy to get to know each other and build a strong team dynamic. The same group of people can continue along a journey together and progress our characters, not unlike my overall experience working at Thumbtack.
