Why I Joined: Jordan Berry, User Researcher

Jordan Berry joined Thumbtack’s User Research team to help build a robust and agile research practice that can solve customer problems and inform product decisions. With the rollout of Instant Match, Jordan has been busy interviewing pros and collecting and analyzing data to understand how to improve Thumbtack for businesses. Here’s why Jordan decided to join the Thumbtack team, in her own words.

As a researcher, I want to do more than just fix issues and make sure a product is usable. I want to help build an agile research practice to make a product better in its earliest phases. With Thumbtack, I saw the opportunity to do just that — and at a growing, high-energy startup.

Finding a values fit.

Thumbtack aligns with everything I was looking for in my next role. I wanted to work at an organization that adds value to people’s daily lives, and has a commitment to learning about customers through qualitative research. Thumbtack does more than help people check projects off their to-do lists — our platform supports small business owners and helps them to make a sustainable living. Double win.

Not to mention the food is top-notch and we have kombucha on tap.

Saying “yes” and joining the Thumbtack team.

After my first interview with another researcher at Thumbtack, I remember saying to my roommate that I couldn’t remember ever feeling so excited after an interview — and I still have that excitement about what we’re building here almost every day.

Week #1 — working hard, then going home.

One of the things that struck me about my first week was how friendly and focused everyone was. People at Thumbtack work hard, then go home. The team is incredibly smart and applies an honesty to the product that I think is pretty rare.

I also remember drinking a lot of kombucha.

My first project at Thumbtack was a four-week diary study following eight pros’ experiences through the launch of a new feature. Not only did this fundamentally change the way pros interact with the product, but it also impacted many areas of the business. I was immediately tackling interesting problems. The company gave me a lot of confidence and responsibility right from the start — and it made for a fun and enriching assignment.

I look forward to learning about our pros and advocating for their success every day in my work at Thumbtack. And I feel lucky to be the one doing it.
