Virtual onboarding vs office onboarding

Starting a new job can be exciting and at the same time, stressful and daunting. You may feel overwhelmed by the many thoughts on how to perform your work, how to build good relationships with your colleagues and how to digest all the new information during your onboarding phase.

The more you think about your new job, the more questions arise. With this article, we aim to remove the overthinking and show how we integrate our employees as smoothly as possible on our mission to revolutionise the financial industry- both virtually and at home.

We want to be transparent and open by showing our entire process, from beginning to end. After all, onboarding is a highly important time where we do our best to provide new Bitwalians with everything you need to begin your journey with Bitwala.

In previous months, we started the day with a breakfast event where the teams would get to know each other before starting their employment. No matter if we’re working remotely, we’re still making it happen!

Team Intro — Monday morning — 10:00 AM

The long-awaited day has finally arrived and you are set to #own your first day! Get ready to be welcomed by our team and touch base with our founders during our Monday Jour Fixe meeting.

During Jour Fixe, every team reports the status on their OKR’s and any other important information is shared in the company. You have a busy day ahead.

Tech Onboarding — 11:00 AM

We use Google Hangouts to set up our calls and your second meeting of the day is the Tech onboarding with Deepu, from the Security and Infrastructure team.

During this meeting, you will gain access to all the company-wide tools and our IT-whizz Deepu will make sure you’re all set up and ready to go. 💻

Slack, Asana & Google Suite are the tools we live by.

People and Culture Onboarding — 12:00 PM

In the People and Culture onboarding, new hires go through the history of Bitwala and discover more about the company mission, vision and culture.

Bitwala’s onboarding process is divided into three major milestones: The first day, 30 days and 90 days at Bitwala.

During the first month of onboarding, every employee will attend a welcome session meeting with our co-founder and CEO Ben, go through department introductions, experience a Customer Service Rotation and have regular onboarding performance reviews with their line manager and the P&C team.

Virtual lunch — Monday morning — 13:00 PM

After a long morning, a well-deserved lunch is what you need. Back at the office, we would have a team lunch in one of the many restaurants around our office in Berlin, Kreuzberg.

Since this has not been possible in the last months due to the COVID-19 restriction, Bitwala’s Finance team decided to deliver pizza’s when onboarding their new Junior Controlling colleague to the team! #Kudos

Security Onboarding — 14:00PM

It is important that every new hire learns more about how to work securely from home and how to protect themselves from potential cyber risks.

Our Head of Security performs onboarding training, educating new hires on security methods, how to stay vigilant and best-protected as well as vital online safety procedures.

Team specific onboarding —15:00 PM

And now finally, it’s time for your team-specific onboarding.

Dive-deep into an onboarding session with your team and learn about your work, responsibilities, upcoming objectives and expectations.

Onboarding survey- Your first day 18:00 PM

Last but not least, comes the onboarding survey. One of our greatest ambitions for onboarding is to make sure every new starter has had a great first day and experiences happiness and excitement throughout the meetings, even if these happen at home.

We do this because we want to learn how we have done and how to improve, and by asking every hire to fill out our onboarding survey, we believe onboarding is “make or break” opportunity for us — it sets the stage for the future wellbeing of our newcomers.
