Startup culture has received a lot of mixed publicity over the last few years and both leaders and HR teams are constantly experimenting with unique ways to create a strong company culture that results in happy employees.

We all know that culture is way more than just free beer Fridays, competitive foosball, company outings and other pricey perks. Don’t get us wrong, all these things are motivational miracles and the crux of our team-building activities, however, they’re not the be-all and end-all of our overall company vision.

You could say we’re big on company culture.

Culture is different in every organisation and varies based on leadership, business operating model, the nature of the business combined with a variety of other factors. Cultures need to be nourished and can be shaped and changed.

Company culture affects how the company operates, employee behaviours and how things get done. Chances are, company culture affects the performance of your business.

The truth is, deep down every employee wants to find meaning in their job, and as an employer, you can make the difference in people’s lives.

For us, company culture is what binds us together, what drives performance, employee well-being and what incentives knowledge sharing throughout our company.

As a growing startup, we have experienced a very low turnover rate and have been able to retain our employees during the toughest of times.

In December 2017, Wavecrest, a card issuer with a VISA license was forced to disable all their cards and partnerships with many companies overnight due to noncompliance with VISA regulation. As our bank ended its relationship with us, we had to build an entirely new product from scratch with a strict deadline and a low budget. Despite this setback, our employee turnover was still 0. This was a testament that we had successfully produced a close-knit and loyal culture. (You can read more about the Bitwala story here).

We stuck together, worked hard and believed in our mission.

Company culture is fundamental to keep a company and teams together. It doesn’t matter if it’s the broader company culture or team subculture, what matters is that teams have a set of beliefs and values providing guidelines on how to work daily and help teams survive during difficult situations.

What’s in company values? We swear by ours. Not only do we live and breathe crypto, but we also live by a particular set of core values that sets us apart from the rest. Here they are:

Live the revolution

Blockchain is going to change the world. We’re the catalyst. Be part of the community.

Not another bank

Trust and responsibility without old-fashioned thinking.

Adapt

When our product was destroyed, we came back stronger than ever.

Mind your karma

Be the best you can be and help your colleagues do the same. Lead by example.

The best idea wins

Value ideas over hierarchy. Listen, learn and speak your mind.

Aim for the moon

Well-funded, our team doubled in size within 6 months. Here’s a little secret: we’re going to be huge.

We purposely built an environment where people can flourish and respect is key in this process. We worship and value those who work with us and those who we work for, mainly our users.

These values lead us in our daily interactions with customers, candidates, partners and our team has created an incredible environment for all of us here at Bitwala.
