Helpful Letter #27

Hello fellow writers,

After Medium’s recent clearinghouse of wiping out the bots, my views have plunged this month.

For me, it’s troubling but it is summer. People are out. Some writers aren’t writing as much, so they may not be reading as much either.

So this brings me to my former life where I spent a few years as an Army planner. I was tasked to plan — look at our training or what enemy forces were doing in regards to where US forces were located. As a writer, I try to do the same. No bad guys but the process is a little similar.

Of course, it’s impossible to know what your readers are doing but you have to look at the current situation.

It’s summer, kids are on break, some cities have opened up, and people are traveling more.

Then some people are writing on NewsBreak which is causing Medium to make some changes. They offered bonuses to some writers, and this is supposed to be the last month. Then next month, they are offering a base pay of $200 to some writers with at least 200 followers. I received the offer and accepted it. I’m waiting to see their follow-up.

Writing for the second half of the year will be interesting.

Recently, I also saw Facebook was creating a new program, an incentive for creators. I’m not sure what this entails but that could put more pressure on Medium.

If Medium is your main source of writing, be open to other writing avenues. The writing world is going through some changes lately.

Just like when technology first appeared in the late 90s, there was a lot of competition — AOL, Netscape, Apple, Dell, and so on. Then a few mergers happened and a few websites completely vanished.

The world of writing may see something similar between Medium, NewsBreak, Vocal, and other writing platforms. Some sites may vanish or merge. A few may compete for your writing skills with bonuses or pay.

I would say be open to new opportunities and read the initial guidance these companies provide.

They may offer something better than Medium or they could offer something that’s not as great. No one knows. Just be open and if you need to jump ship, think hard before you do.

Just sharing my thoughts.

Take care,
