Memorial Day became an official holiday in 1971 to remember men and women who died serving their country.

Many people confuse Memorial Day with Veterans Day. Veterans Day is on November 11 to honor veterans who served.

So do not make it a habit to say Happy Memorial Day, save that for Veteran’s Day. You might rub some veterans or family members the wrong way.

Memorial Day was originally named Decoration Day after the Civil War. Today, many family members visit cemeteries or those who gave their lives serving their country.

Some take this day to spend time with family and friends since it is also a national holiday. After Memorial Day, some see it as the start of summer which technically doesn’t officially begin until June 20.

Recently I spent time with two friends who I served with in combat in Jordan.

One retired from the Army, and the other is still serving.

Last year I took a class from Harvard University on Managing Happiness.
