Penchant for Pain

Don’t ask me why — a rhyming poem

a fired grill; black with the flames dancing on the top
Photo by Adi Goldstein on Unsplash

I placed two fingers on a hot stove
Was to remind me that it burns
A loud ouch and a quick pull back
My thinking must have been off track;

But why so many times we do
The same old things as if they’re new
Knowing the outcome that will result
And then we start to scream and shout

I didn’t expect it to hurt this time
As if repeating a nursery rhyme
Learned behaviour, stupidity
Another name’s insanity;

To keep repeating
Never ceasing
The same refrain
Again and again

As if a puppet on string
We can’t control what we’re doing
And so the master watches our squirm
No foundation, cannot stand firm;

My fingers now an angry red
All I could do was shake my head
And marvel at this penchant for pain
While in my mind, the thoughts remain;

To keep repeating
Never ceasing
The same refrain
Again and again
