Remembering My Mother Gratefully

I can not think of her and not be grateful

I write with no picture of her
with me today, as I have not
been home for sixteen years.

She was my only friend for
my first three and a half years.
Two years me, she started a new life
in the tiny town as a teacher,
as my father was being treated in the city.
She taught me to walk, talk
