Being an app-only supermarket has many advantages. In December, for the second year, we made the most of our digital service and ran a campaign in collaboration with the Dutch Foodbank.

Picnic’s customers donated over 85,000 products to people in need. It’s such an incredible achievement and we’re so happy to reach this figure with a customer base of 200,000 people!

Christmas is the season for giving. People doing their festive shopping are happy and willing to donate products to the Foodbank. At a regular supermarket, you pay for a product at checkout and leave them to be collected. It’s great that so many people want to help Foodbanks.

However, this can lead to huge stockpiles and logistical challenges. The donations have to be collected, transported, stored and finally distributed to a local food bank. During Christmas, the extra generosity caused by the festive spirit can result in problems. The oversupply of goods sometimes makes it difficult to get food to where it’s really needed. And because people like to donate during Christmas, there is often a lack of supplies for food banks in February and March.

We wanted to harness our customers’ generosity to make giving as easy as possible, for everyone.

Picnic’s Foodbank Campaign

Picnic’s customers choose what they’d like to give away and pay for it when they place their order. To give everyone the opportunity to donate to the Foodbank, there is a range of products from single items to multi-product packages.

We do the hard work (the ordering, heavy lifting, driving and delivering) and allow our customers to donate products to people who need it…just with a tap of their fingertips!

Customer donations don’t need to be physically stored anywhere. Instead, we create a digital stockpile of food. This saves space, effort and time. We work closely with the Foodbank to decide the best moment to order products from our suppliers. Donations can be given out exactly when and where is needed.

When we wait to hand out donations, we’re ensuring that no one goes without food even when food bank supplies are low.

Treating those in need

Throughout the year, food banks receive fresh products close to their sell-by date or products that are damaged; like fruit, vegetables, or broken biscuits. With our Foodbank campaign, we decided to do something different. We wanted to treat people. But we also chose items with a long shelf life. That means everyone gets a nice surprise and there are no best-before-date issues!

Our customers can donate a range of tasty treats, like a pancake meal, a surprise or breakfast box. These are products that aren’t usually found at the Foodbank but are guaranteed to make people smile.

More and more each year

We’re overwhelmed by the amount that Picnic’s customers have donated. They’re making the most of our digital service to give to the Dutch Foodbank. By harnessing the power of generosity, our customers ensure that there’s a supply of products for the post-Christmas period.

The figures from 2018’s Picnic Foodbank campaign speak for themselves. It’s still possible to buy products for this campaign until the end of the year, so the numbers will only increase.

Each year, Picnic’s customers donate more and more. We’re already excited to see the joy that the 2019 donations bring!
