After experiencing Covid, it isn’t hard to imagine a world in which a virus causes a global lockdown. But what if the pandemic turned the infected into bloodthirsty monsters?

This is exactly what happens in HBO’s newest post-apocalyptic series, “The Last of Us.” The horrific thriller keeps the audience’s blood pumping as it follows the cross-country journey of two survivors.

With more than 22 million viewers within 12 days, The Last of Us is HBO’s second most successful series premiere in more than a decade. It’s no surprise the show is largely popular across demographics considering the action-packed plot also includes dramatic elements and humor that enrich the characters so they appeal to almost any viewer.

Based on and named after an award-winning video game, “The Last of Us” takes place 20 years after a fungus called Cordyceps — which only affects insects in real life — has infected humans taking over their minds to advance its survival. In this world, the government controls every aspect of life, resources are extremely limited, and no one is safe. Ever.

The main character, Joel (Pedro Pascal), survives by smuggling goods in and out of the Boston quarantine zone he ended up in after losing his daughter in the early stages of the pandemic. The real trouble begins when he finds himself transporting a 14-year-old orphan, Ellie, (Bella Ramsey) across what remains of the United States. If Joel can get Ellie to her destination, there may be hope for a cure, but the journey appears to be almost impossible.

Often compared to “The Walking Dead,” there are a few things this new series does better. For instance, the infected in “The Last of Us” pose a greater threat that intensifies the thrill more than zombies that move at a snail’s pace. Moreover, it seems like the majority of people have lost interest in “The Walking Dead,” while “The Last of Us” offers a new experience full of new adventures.

While the series has been acclaimed as the best video game-inspired show ever, this is also its greatest weakness. Those who are familiar with the game already know what to expect as the plots are almost identical.

Written by American screenwriter Craig Mazi, and the original game writer and co-director, Neil Druckmann, it is the largest television production in Canadian history. Shortly after the premiere of season one, HBO confirmed there will be a season two and hinted that it may follow the same plot as the sequel game, Part II.

The popularity of “The Last of Us” proves that even after experiencing the worst of Covid-19, viewers aren’t sick of global pandemics just yet.

To Watch: After the premiere, which aired Jan. 15, new episodes released on HBO Max every Sunday until the finale on March 12. Season 1 is nine episodes. Premiere date for season two has yet to be released.
