The new phenomenon known as pickleball has become a viral sensation in the United States. Since going viral on social media, the sport has become more widespread across the nation, with a reported 8.9 million players in 2023.

Pickleball is a mix of tennis and ping-pong, played mostly outdoors. It’s also popular for being easy to learn. While it was first taken up by older generations, in recent months, people in their 20s and 30s have begun to play the sport, especially in Austin, Texas.

This has led to a handful of new courts opening up around Austin, attracting many to not only play but also meet new people. One of these courts. Austin Pickle Ranch, is on W. 6th Street near Lady Bird Lake.

Opened just five months ago, the courts are on top of a parking garage overlooking the city skyline and the Westlake hills. Especially after 5 PM, the courts are booked and usually require reservations.

The Pickle Ranch provides many leisure spots and activities outside pickleball such as cornhole. And you can grab a drink and mingle with other Austinites.
