The state of Texas as a whole is well known for being fairly flat. However, a portion of central Texas, dubbed the Texas Hill Country, is anything but. This landscape lends itself to being the home of Texas’ first alpine coaster, the Cliff Carver.

Alpine coasters are constructed of a cart mounted on a length of track, and are powered by gravity and the surrounding landscape. Due to the way this ride gains speed, each car is equipped with brakes each rider can personally control.

Normally, rides like this are found in mountainous areas, located both in and out of the United States. However, last year Texas opened its first (and currently only) addition to this type of attraction in New Braunfels.

The Cliff Carver, located inside Camp Fimfo Texas Hill Country, is open year ’round to the public, and welcomes hundreds of visitors a day during its peak summer season.

Rides on this coaster can last anywhere from 8 minutes to 10 minutes depending on braking. Depending on height, age and weight requirements, each cart can hold one or two people. There are cameras mounted on each cart and video of each ride if riders want to hold onto a keepsake.

Check out the video above to learn more.

The Cliff Carver‘s address: 520 Whitewater Way, New Braunfels, TX, 78132

Summer Hours: Open everyday from 11 a.m. til 7:30 p.m.
