Life huh? Sometimes it feels we are like Sisyphus, compelled to relive tragedies again and again.

In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was punished by Zeus for his deceitfulness. He was forced for an eternity to roll an immense boulder up a hill only for it to roll down every time it neared the top.

For centuries the Greeks and Romans have entertained and educated us, in classic tragedy.

In more recent times we have had the benefit of wisdom from Shakespeare’s ten tragedies (Romeo and Juliet, King Lear, Hamlet, Othello, Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, Macbeth, Coriolanus, Timon of Athens and Titus Andronicus). Yet, we relive Shakespears tragedies again and again.

Why is that?

Well, to answer the question, let’s start by understanding what we mean by tragedy. In a traditional sense, tragedies are a reflection or imitation of life. They often centre around a central protagonist who must overcome internal and external challenges.

Sounds familiar? That’s why we love them so much! They entertain and help us in a story format to navigate through life.
