Dear Lift And Shift Community,

As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting our community, we’re sharing some important updates and insights. For anyone who hasn’t experienced this for themselves, identity theft is a big deal. It’s an even greater impact on veterans and other groups that rely on pensions, retirement, and disability compensation.

“Claim Predator” is a term that describes aggressive companies or individuals that prey on veterans to steal their entitlements. Predators will promise a 100% disability rating, unrealistic claim processing times, and charge thousands of dollars for services that a trusted Veteran Service Organization (VSO) provides for free.

Read more directly from the VA, but we’ve also been doing our part because being constantly vigilant about security can be incredibly stressful. This is a short list of what we’ve been up to, along with some tips of our own.

Security Upgrades: Recently, we’ve made significant enhancements to our website’s infrastructure. These changes are designed to provide a more secure and user-focused experience. Here are the key highlights:

  • User Account System: We implemented a new, secure user account system. We understand the importance of data privacy and personal identification, especially for veterans who may be targeted by online scams. Our redesign involves transitioning away from reliance on big tech platforms, prioritizing user privacy and security.
  • Clicky Analytics: To better serve our community, we’re moving away from Google Analytics to Clicky, a privacy-focused analytics solution. This helps us keep user data from being shared with third-party platforms.

Tips for Online Security: As veterans, we hear plenty about predators seeking access to benefits. Here are some practical tips to stay vigilant:

  • Strong Passwords: Regularly update your passwords and avoid using easily guessable information.
  • Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Enable 2FA wherever possible to add an extra layer of security.
  • Phishing Awareness: Be cautious of suspicious emails or messages asking for personal information.
  • Verify Sources: Before clicking on links or sharing sensitive data, verify the source.

You can use a password manager app to help you. Many of them, like Proton Pass, have browser extensions to help take the stress out of surfing the web. Some of them can even tell you if your passwords have been found online.

Friendly reminder that we’re a 501c3 charity and the best thing you can do to support our work is share these tips to help others. Thanks for being part of the Lift And Shift community. Together, we can create a safer online environment for everyone.

Best regards,

Team Lift And Shift
