Want to Write for Light Hustler?

First things first…what is a Light Hustler?

Glad you asked. A Light Hustler is someone who shares his or dark to find his or light — light in the spiritual sense, the humorous sense or whatever other sense makes sense. How can you recognize one when you see one? Well, if you’re reading this, we’re guessing you’re one yourself.

Light Hustler is part of a corporation that includes courses, a coaching program (and accompanying Facebook group), a publishing division, a podcast, a storytelling show and much more. Each of these divisions is aimed at helping those who have survived challenging experiences share their stories with others and find their light (in both the spiritual and humorous sense) in the process.

Re $$$: we are not part of Medium’s paid program. This means that you will not be paid for anything you submit here. As someone who strongly believes writers should get paid for their work, let me explain: I believe Medium is the publisher of the future—that websites that pay their writers will be evaporating one by one and writers being paid for online content will soon be a thing of the past. You could call this depressing but I don’t. I made a great living as a writer for years…and then it all changed. I don’t get paid to run this publication and that’s okay. I now see writing as an amazing way to build a platform that we then use that to make a living (this is the whole rationale behind my course Audience Building for Writers). If you publish in the Medium paid program, you are limiting your audience a great deal and my goal is to get everyone as much exposure as possible. Still, I can personally vouch for how important it can feel at times to get paid to write. So: if you want to be paid for your writing, join Medium’s paid program! If you are just interested in exposure, submit here. That is why we can publish work you’ve published elsewhere before, provided you have permission from that publisher (HOWEVER, PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT WORK THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN PUBLISHED ON MEDIUM).I do not want you spending time where you could be earning money doing free work.

IF YOUR WORK IS PUBLISHED HERE, YOU ARE ALSO GRANTING PERMISSION FOR IT BE POSTED ON THE LIGHT HUSTLER BLOG

The stories we publish here can be about any aspect of sharing your dark to find your light. They can be about recovery. They can be about love. They can be about self-love. They can be about mental health or bunny rabbits or anxiety or why you spent the majority of your morning looking at Reese Witherspoon’s daughter’s Instagram feed, wondering how her relationship is with her dad. It doesn’t matter what it is so long as it’s about how the darker experiences you’ve had have allowed you to access your lighter self.

If you would like to become a contributor and are not already, please send an email to assistant@annadavid.com with a link to your Medium profile.

If you are already a contributor, you will see Light Hustler as a publication option (you only have to be accepted once in order for this to happen but it does not guarantee that all of your work will be published).

We accept essays, blog posts, poems or anything else in that vein that you’d like to submit (stories must be a minimum of 800 words; those that tend to attract the most readers are essays that are roughly 1000 words where the text is broken up into different sections with headers). We do slight editing at times, including the occasional changing of headlines.

PLEASE make sure your work is proof read and as error free as humanly possible. (Try using Grammarly if you need help on that one.)

OTHER STYLE RULES TO FOLLOW [PLEASE NOTE: YOUR SUBMISSION MAY BE REJECTED DESPITE ITS EXCELLENT WRITING IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW THESE…WE RECOMMEND READING YOUR PIECE THROUGH FOR TYPOS SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE SUBMITTING]

We do not accept posts that have spaces at the beginning of sentences

Titles and all headings must have all first words capitalized; titles must spell out to the best of your abilities what the piece is about (go for clear over clever). Randomly bolding sentences in your piece is NOT the way to do a header; headers are there to give the reader a preview of what s/he will find in the section. Please do not randomly italicize sections or sentences that you would like to emphasize.

All sections must consist of at least two paragraphs

All quotes need to have periods within quote marks (ie, “quote marks.” NOT “quote marks”.)

We do not use the Oxford comma (ie “planes, trains and automobiles” NOT “planes, trains, and automobiles”)

If you’re going to include quotations from luminaries, place them UNDER headings and not instead of headings; if you’re going to include these quotations, use them consistently throughout the piece and not just once

Unless it’s the beginning of a sentence, we spell out the numbers 10 and under and use numbers for 11 and above (ie, “I was two years old” and not “I was 2 years old” and “I was 11 years old and not I was eleven years old” — this also means we write 12-step [number-dash-lower case s] and not Twelve-step (unless it’s the beginning of a sentence, as explained above).

We capitalize Higher Power. We also capitalize the word step in the context of 12–step (ie Step Five and not step five)

You are allowed to include a link to your website, podcast, newsletter list or anything else, provided the entire piece of work isn’t one long sales pitch.

Again…keep in mind that these can be pieces you’ve already published elsewhere PROVIDED YOU HAVE PERMISSION to repost. But you CANNOT publish here if you are part of Medium’s paid program. This is solely for writers looking for exposure and not to get paid.

We can only accept drafts. Here’s how you add one:

  • Click on your profile picture and choose “New Story” from the drop-down menu
  • Write a title in the TITLE section
  • Add an image by clicking that plus sign in a circle. [THE IMAGES YOU USE MUST BE ROYALTY-FREE. THIS STORY RECOMMENDS MULTIPLE SITES THAT OFFER ROYALTY-FREE IMAGES]
  • Copy (or begin typing) your story into/onto the blank page
  • Add formatting (bold, italics, links etc)
  • Add tags (click on Ready to Publish and type tags into the box (the only tag you MUST include is LIGHT HUSTLER…other possibilities include RECOVERY, ADDICTION RECOVERY, MENTAL HEALTH, TRAUMA, SEX, PARENTING, DRUGS, LIFE, LIFE LESSONS, THIS HAPPENED TO ME — anything that your post touches on that would appeal to a wide audience.)
  • Access the drop-down by clicking on the little hamburger menu at the top, click ADD TO PUBLICATION and then select LIGHT HUSTLER
  • Click ADD DRAFT (do not hit PUBLISH!)

That’s it! You’ll get a confirmation message that your draft was submitted. You will then get a message when it is published. If a submission is not accepted, you will be notified.

In order to be accepted, pieces must:

-Include a royalty-free photo at the top

-Have a compelling title that describes what the piece is about

-Have a central clear idea with a beginning, middle and end

-Follow basic rules of formatting and punctuation (no random capitalization or bolding, no run-on sentences, et al)

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR WORK [AND YOUR DARK] WITH US.
